Elite skills team 'fight for nation's future'

Twelve young British engineers - the elite of their generation – began the battle in Brazil today (Wednesday August 12th) to fight for their nation's future.

Competitors from more than 60 nations have gathered in Sao Paulo to go for gold at the WorldSkills finals commonly known as the 'Skills Olympics'.

Team UK soaked up the applause and the warmth of the Brazilian welcome at a glittering multi-million real (currency) Opening Ceremony at a packed Ginasio Ibirapuera.

Two colleagues from Chester have touched down in Brazil for the chance of 'superstardom' on the global stage at WorldSkills – the 'Skills Olympics'.

Robyn Clarke and Andy Smith, both aged 22 and working for Toyota, have survived a gruelling four-year selection process to get to the very pinnacle of their profession with the help of Sector Skills Council Semta.

The elite 12-strong team will compete before 100,000 spectators and hundreds of members of the media from around the World.

Twelve young British engineers - the elite of their generation – do battle in Brazil this week at the finals WorldSkills 2015.

Competitors from eighty nations have gathered in Sao Paulo to go for gold at the 'Skills Olympics'

The immensely talented top ten have already seen off more than 600 young hopefuls during regional and national heats organised by Semta – the Sector Skills Council for engineering and Advanced Manufacturing.
