Finalists announced for WorldSkills UK 2017

Semta, the organising partner for the WorldSkills UK (WSUK) engineering competitions, has praised the high level of talent among this year's finalist cohort.

Competing in front of 70,000 spectators at The Skills Show in Birmingham, 118 finalists - made up of apprentices and vocational learners from across the UK - will compete in 13 different disciplines including welding, mechatronics and aeronautical engineering.

Talented engineers, companies and training providers urged to enter prestigious industry awards

A prestigious industry-backed set of engineering awards is now open for nominations – and the body responsible is urging talented individuals and companies to put themselves forward to be in with a chance of winning.

Semta, the engineering skills body, has been running its annual Semta Skills Awards for five years.

The 2018 awards – which will be hosted by BBC journalist, presenter and former Young Engineer for Britain, Steph McGovern - are set to take place on Thursday 1st March at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London, with entries open from 1st September 2017 until November 30th.

The Best Career Choice in the World: Industry Apprentices’ Message to Young People

Ahead of GCSE and A-Level results days, a leading group of engineering apprentices is urging young people to be calm and consider the full range of options – whatever their results.

According to the latest research by the Industry Apprentice Council, 98% of engineering apprentices are happy with their career choice – and this finding cuts across apprentices at all levels, from Level 2 (intermediate level) to Level 6 (degree level).

Businesses urged to train more engineers as new qualification puts Wales on the skills map

Wales has introduced a new engineering qualification, developed by Semta - the engineering skills body, to put the country on an equal footing with other countries across Europe. Employers in the sector have been urged to seize the opportunity to grow their own talent and close the nation's skills gap.

Wales joins a number of other European nations where Master Craftsperson qualifications are recognised, including Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The Master Craftsperson Diploma in Engineering is a higher apprenticeship used in other European nations.

Semta CEO Ann Watson explained why her organisation developed the new qualification, saying: "Wales controls its own skills system and the new Master Craftsperson qualification is unique in the UK.

Jobs for the Girls - initiative launched to help close technical skills gap

apprenticeship-toolkit-logo with websiteA toolkit has been launched to help businesses close the skills gap in the construction, engineering, technology and manufacturing sectors by recruiting women and girls into the sector through apprenticeships.

WISE, which campaigns to get more women into STEM careers, the engineering skills body Semta and the Institution of Civil Engineers have formed a partnership to launch the apprenticeship toolkit for businesses.

Derwent Training Association Announced as Apprentice Team of the Year Finalist

Apprentices from engineering training provider Derwent Training Association, have been named national finalists in the search for the apprentice team of the year.

After four months of hard work by over 650 apprentices from across 75 organisations from the country’s leading apprentice employers, training providers and colleges, the National Finalists of the Brathay Apprentice Challenge were announced at the House of Commons.
